FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After facing one of their strongest challenges this season against Indian River State College two weeks ago, the Nova Southeastern University men's and women's swimming and diving teams will look bounce back when they host Sunshine State Conference rival Tampa on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 10 a.m. at the NSU Aquatic Complex.
In their last outing, the Sharks faced a national powerhouse in Indian River. The No. 7 men's team lost the meet 137-80, while the No. 12 women's team suffered their first dual meet loss of the year, 137-68. Tampa also had a similar feat against IRSC earlier in the season with the No. 9 Spartan men falling 153-109 and their No. 15 women 186-79.
Although the Sharks lost the IRSC meet, a couple of individuals stood out amongst the best. Despite finishing second in the men's 400-yard individual medley, freshman
Marco Aldabe (Alicante, Spain) secured a provisional qualifying time of 4:04.87, making the cut by .02 seconds. It was the second provisional qualifying time for Aldabe this season to go along with his effort in the 200-yard backstroke earlier this season.
Competing in just her second event of the year,
Laura Gutierrez (Fr., Valencia, Spain) posted solid performances in both the women's 400-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly. In the 100 fly, she won with a time of 57.88 missing the provisional cut by .04 seconds, and she finished second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:33.73.
The Tampa women come into the Saturday meet with a 2-2 dual meet record this season and will face the 3-1 Sharks. Both have posted similar wins over Saint Leo and Lynn. In addition to their loss against IRSC, the UT women opened the season with a loss at Florida Southern.
The Spartan men are currently 1-2 in dual meets, but will face Florida Tech on Friday before coming down to South Florida to face the 2-2 Sharks men's team.
